Symptoms of toenail fungus. Our toes are more sensitive than we think. Foot care is almost a last thought for most persons who live busy and not so busy lives. Sometimes we only pay attention when there is pain or discomfort in our toes. Noteworthy is the fact that person who lives completely normal lives are affected by the fungal infection in the toenails.

Usually, the fungus finds itself in common areas making it very easy for anyone to become infected. Moist and wet areas such as swimming pool showers, puddles of waters, nail salon equipment, tight gym shoes, trimming nails inappropriately and sometimes when nail polish may be too concentrated for our nail beds.

Types of Toenail Fungi

Sometimes a person experiences discomfort or pain regardless of toenail fungus being usually a cosmetic concern. There are a number of fungi that affect the toenail. The most common all is a type of fungi called Trichophyton rubrum or Trubrum as it is known. The skin becomes infected if care is not taken when a person is infected with Trubrum.

Symptoms of Toenail Fungus

Distal Subungual– This type of infection begins at the end of the nail and spreads upward and raises the nail up. This is quite a common infection in adults and kids. It starts with a discolored area just at the end of the nail and works its way upward to the cuticle. The toenail becomes thick and flaky with signs of peeling of the skin and athlete’s foot.

Proximal Subungual Onychomycosis– This type of infection is the least common of all. It starts at the base of the nail and works its way down to the end of the nail. The nail raises at the base, this type of nail infection mostly happens in persons who have sustained damage to their immune system.

Yeast onychomycosis– Very rare in toenails but most prominent in fingernails. This yeast affects the cuticle of the nail and is known as Candida. This yeast infection causes the nails to turn yellow, brown, or white.

White Superficial onychomycosis– With this condition the nail becomes dry and a physcian will need to scrape the dry nails of the toes. Commonly seen in tropical areas. This fungi is know as Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Fungal Nail Infection
